 7 tricks to stop being afraid to perform

Many of us are familiar with this frightening feeling, aren't we? It is absolutely normal when we are afraid of something and try to fight it. But, often, people are afraid to change anything and naively try to escape from their fears and experiences. Sometimes it is difficult to distinguish fear from any other feeling.

What is fear?

In psychology, fear is a basic "emotion" that we experience every day at work, at school, on the street, at home, and in any other place. Fear is mainly caused by your personality traits or self-doubt. Many people are afraid of different things: water, heights, pain, failure, death. The fear may be the same, but people start to behave in completely different ways: someone is panic-stricken, someone ceases to control their emotions.
This article will focus on the well-known phobia: the so-called" stage fright". Many people say that their biggest fear is public speaking at an event, concert, in front of employees, classmates, or in any other institution. Someone is afraid to speak in front of a large group of people, and for someone even talking to one person seems like a nightmare.

This problem is faced by a huge number of people at different ages. Do you know the feeling when your hands are shaking, your heart is pounding, and fear seems to paralyze your body? Fear makes us experience all these States. The most important thing is to understand what scares you most about your performance.

some people believe that fear can also play a positive role in their lives. It teaches a person what is dangerous and what is useful for them.  But there are times when fear stands in the way of your success, goal achievement, career advancement, etc. It ruins your plans and shackles you. It is very important to feel the master of your fear!

If You are afraid to speak publicly, then you should overcome this fear. There are a lot of ways, but more on that later.

"Why?" you may ask. "Why should I fight this fear?» By overcoming the fear of public speaking, you will be able to speak convincingly, sound like a leader, share your ideas, get promoted, and so on.

First of all, find the reason why you need to do this. Set a goal, and then you try different ways to find a solution to your problem.

Why are people afraid to perform?

Hundreds of pairs of eyes stare at you. It's so scary! Do you Think you're the only one? Unfortunately, no. There are thousands and even millions of such people. There are many reasons why people are afraid to speak in front of an audience. Here are the main ones:

- too many people in front of you;
- the performance is something new and unknown for you;
- you think too much about what others think of you;
- you are afraid of failure and even think about it;
- you are afraid of losing control of the situation.

There may be many more reasons. Every time we speak in front of an audience, we are afraid of something. This fear prevents us from showing who we really are and what we want to convey to the audience. We are all afraid of different things. But not everyone is able to face their own fear and look it in the eye.

7 tricks how to overcome your fear:

1. Comfort zone.
You can feel comfortable outside your comfort zone. It sounds strange, but it's true. Preparation of presentations and performance in front of an audience at first seems to be just a nightmare. If you want to grow, learn, and succeed, then you need to step out of your comfort zone. First, start preparing your speech or presentation and start doing it as early as possible. This will be your first step. So if you're afraid to perform or anything, just start doing it.

2. Practice.
This is one of the most important points. You must understand that everything is not so fast and easy. Talk as much as possible. You can speak in front of a mirror or in front of a camera. This way you will see what you are doing well and what you need to work on.

3. Visualization.
Close your eyes. Imagine that you are performing. It doesn't matter if it's a crowd or a small group of people. Don't think about your failures. You perform, and all these people look at you and listen carefully. They want you to succeed. Don't rush when you speak. Focus on what you want to convey. You can visualize your performance a thousand times and when day X comes, you won't be so scared. Just accept yourself as you are and think positively!

4. Breathe!
Take a few deep breaths before you go on stage. This will help you start your performance more confidently. There are a large number of breathing techniques that can help you relieve tension and concentrate. But when you speak in public, your breathing should be natural. Otherwise, if you think about your breathing, you may forget something important.

5. Don't waste your time, focus!
Very often, when we perform in front of an audience, we think too much about ourselves: about our appearance, manners, voice, etc. We forget what we are talking about. It is very important to convey what you want to convey to people. Focus on your audience, not yourself.

6. Competence. Confidence depends on competence.
Of course, it is very important to be competent in what you do. When you understand what you are talking about, you feel much more confident. If a topic is not clear to you, you should find out about it and make notes. Then it won't be so scary to perform.

How to stop fear in my life
You may not be a great speaker, but you have something to convey to the audience.  In one of his interviews, the famous American film actor, Richard Gere said: "I'm a bad dancer, but I'm an actor and I know how to pretend well."  You may also have heard this American expression: "Pretend until it's true." During your performance, you can also pretend, and people will believe you. It won't be easy, but practice and patience will help you.

Completely overcoming your fear of speaking out in public is a very difficult task! It is impossible to get rid of it at all, but with the help of some tips you can weaken it. The cure for fear is within us, and our body is able to decide for itself when we need fear and when we don't.
